Great toys and books for our toddlers (around 1–2 years old)

As a speech and language therapist, I often get asked by parents what toys and books they should buy for their toddlers. It can feel overwhelming with so many options available! So, I’ve put together a list based on my experience and what I’ve found works well.

Remember, every child is unique!

Observe your toddler’s interests and play style. Some toys that are popular might not be engaging for your child.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Sensory Toys:

  • Stacking cups: These are fantastic for developing hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and understanding size relationships. (Various brands available) Note: You can stack many things you have around the house, like bowls or measuring cups, for a similar experience!
  • Shape sorters: Help with shape recognition, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving. (Melissa & Doug, Vtech)
  • Sensory balls: Balls with different textures (soft, bumpy, squishy) provide tactile stimulation. (Various brands)
  • Push and pull toys: Encourage gross motor development and exploration. (Vtech, Fisher-Price)

Communication-focused toys:

  • Picture books with flaps: Engage curiosity and encourage language development. (Various brands)
  • Talking toys: Introduce new vocabulary and encourage imitation. (Vtech, Fisher-Price)
  • Simple puzzles: Develop hand-eye coordination, problem-solving, and spatial awareness. (Melissa & Doug, Ravensburger)
  • Musical instruments: Encourage exploration of sounds and develop auditory skills. (Bright Starts, Fisher-Price)

Now, let’s talk about books:

  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle: A classic with repetitive text and vibrant illustrations, great for introducing vocabulary and concepts like days of the week.
  • Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle: Simple, repetitive text and engaging illustrations make this a favourite for many toddlers.
  • Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown: A soothing bedtime story with calming illustrations.
  • Pat the Bunny by Dorothy Kunhardt: An interactive book with textures and flaps to engage young children.
  • Corduroy by Don Freeman: A heartwarming story about a teddy bear who loses his button.

Remember:

  • Observe your child’s interests: Choose toys and books that capture their attention and encourage exploration.
  • Engage with your child: Play with the toys together and read books aloud with enthusiasm.
  • Keep it simple: Start with a few toys and books and gradually introduce new ones.
  • Rotate toys: Keep playtime fresh by rotating toys and books regularly.
  • Most importantly, have fun! Reading and playing with your child should be a joyful experience for both of you.

Also consider the power of open-ended play

In today’s world filled with electronic gadgets, it’s easy to overlook the value of open-ended play. Open-ended toys lack specific functions or prescribed outcomes, allowing children to use their imaginations to explore and create. Unlike toys with pre-determined ways to play, open-ended toys encourage:

  • Creative thinking: Children can use them in countless ways, developing their own rules and narratives. A block can become a car, a house, or a spaceship, depending on the child’s imagination.
  • Problem-solving skills: Children learn to figure out how to use the toys, experimenting and adapting as they go. Don’t immediately rush in and fix things for your little one, let them think for themselves and then communication incentive: let them come and find you!
  • Fine motor skills: Many open-ended toys, like blocks, encourage the development of fine motor skills like grasping, stacking, and building.
  • Cognitive development: Children learn about cause and effect, spatial relationships, and problem-solving as they play with open-ended toys.
  • Social-emotional development: Open-ended play can foster social interaction and cooperation as children play together and share ideas.

Simple toys with big impact

Some of the best toys for toddlers are often the simplest ones. Here are a few examples:

  • Wooden blocks: Building towers, bridges, and forts encourages creativity and problem-solving.
  • Balls: Throwing, kicking, and rolling balls promote gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  • Fabric: Bits of fabric can be draped, draped, and used for imaginative play.
  • Empty boxes: From cardboard boxes to tissue boxes, these can be transformed into anything a child can imagine: a car, a house, a spaceship!
  • Natural materials: Sticks, leaves, pinecones, and rocks can be used for imaginative play and sensory exploration.

Remember, the key to open-ended play is to let children explore and discover

Step back and observe, allowing your child to use his or her imaginations without too much direction. You might be surprised at the creative ways he or she uses simple toys!

    The hidden impact of mouth breathing and open mouth posture on speech and feeding

    When most people think about speech or feeding difficulties, they picture the tongue, lips, or chewing skills, but how a child breathes at rest plays a surprisingly big role too.

    Mouth breathing and open mouth resting posture can quietly influence everything from how a child’s face grows to how clearly they speak, to how confidently they chew and swallow. It’s something many parents never think about, until they start noticing the subtle signs.

    Let’s explore why this happens, what to look for, and how to gently support better breathing and oral posture.

    Recent research supports this link between mouth breathing and speech difficulties. For example, a 2022 study by Alhazmi et al., published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Bioallied Sciences, found that 81.7% of children aged 9–17 who breathed primarily through their mouths presented with speech sound disorders. The study highlights how mouth breathing can significantly influence orofacial development and articulation patterns.

    💨 Why we’re designed to breathe through our nose

    Our bodies are made for nasal breathing. When we breathe through the nose, the air is filtered, warmed, and humidified before reaching the lungs. The tongue naturally rests against the roof of the mouth, the lips close gently, and the jaw stays relaxed, all of which encourage healthy oral development.

    In contrast, mouth breathing often means the tongue rests low in the mouth and the lips stay apart. Over time, this posture can subtly reshape how the muscles and bones of the face grow.

    Children who breathe through their mouths most of the time may develop:

    • A longer face and narrower palate
    • Forward head posture
    • Slightly open lips and low tongue position at rest
    • A tendency toward drooling or noisy breathing
    • A dry mouth and consequently bad breath
    • At times the tongue pushes constantly against the front teeth causing them to grow forward (buck teeth)

    These changes are not anyone’s fault, as they often start because of blocked noses, allergies, enlarged adenoids, low facial muscle tone or habits formed when a child was younger. But understanding the pattern helps us know how to support change.

    🗣 How mouth breathing affects speech

    Speech depends on precise coordination between the lips, tongue, and jaw. The resting position of these structures affects how ready they are to move.

    1. Reduced tongue strength and placement, i.e. the tongue rests low in the mouth (as it does in mouth breathing), it’s harder for children to lift it efficiently for sounds like /T/, /D/, /N/, /L/, and /S/. This can lead to speech that sounds slightly slushy or unclear, or a frontal lisp.
    2. Open mouth posture and resonance: An open mouth at rest may affect how air vibrates in the oral and nasal cavities. Children might have speech that sounds a bit ‘muffled’ or lacks crispness because the lips and jaw aren’t fully supporting articulation.
    3. Fatigue and breath control: Mouth breathing can lead to drier mouths and less efficient breath support. That can make longer sentences or conversations feel tiring, especially in noisy environments.

    🥄 How mouth breathing affects feeding and chewing

    Feeding involves the same structures that control speech, so posture and breathing patterns matter here, too.

    1. Chewing efficiency: Children who habitually keep their mouths open often have low tongue tone and reduced jaw stability. They may prefer softer foods, chew slowly, or struggle with mixed textures.
    2. Swallowing pattern: A tongue that rests low may push forward when swallowing. This ‘tongue-thrust swallow’ can interfere with efficient chewing and even affect dental alignment over time.
    3. Breathing while eating: Since it’s hard to chew, swallow, and breathe through the mouth simultaneously, children who can’t comfortably nasal breathe may rush bites or pause to catch their breath. This can contribute to coughing, choking, or food refusal.

    Common signs to watch for

    Parents often notice subtle clues before realising mouth breathing is a pattern. Some red flags include:

    • Lips habitually open at rest
    • Drooling after the toddler years
    • Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep
    • Preference for soft foods or grazing eating habits
    • Dark circles under the eyes due to allergies
    • Frequent colds, congestion, or mouth odour
    • Speech that sounds slushy or unclear despite good effort

    If several of these sound familiar, it’s worth mentioning them to your child’s GP, dentist, or speech and language therapist.

    👩‍⚕️ What can help

    1. Address the underlying cause: If nasal blockage, allergies, or enlarged adenoids are making nasal breathing difficult, a medical assessment is the first step. ENT specialists can rule out or treat physical causes.
    2. Encourage closed mouth rest: Gentle reminders like ‘Lips together, tongue up, breathe through your nose’ can help older children become aware of their resting posture. For younger ones, visual cues (stickers or mirrors) can make it a game.
    3. Build oral-motor strength and awareness: Speech therapists can design activities to strengthen the tongue and lips, improve jaw stability, and encourage balanced breathing. This might include blowing games, tongue-tip lifts, use of dental-palatal devices or oral-motor exercises disguised as play.
    4. Support good posture: Sometimes mouth breathing goes hand-in-hand with forward-head posture. Encouraging upright sitting during meals and screen time helps keep the airway open and supports better breathing habits.
    5. Make nasal breathing part of daily routines: Gentle nose-breathing practice during calm times (reading, bedtime, car rides) helps normalise it. Avoid making it a battle: calm, consistent reminders work best.

    🌱 A gentle note on change

    Patterns of mouth breathing develop over time, and change doesn’t happen overnight. It’s important to approach this with curiosity, not criticism. The aim isn’t ‘perfect breathing,’ but to give your child the tools and awareness to breathe comfortably and efficiently.

    Small improvements in nasal breathing and resting posture can lead to big gains in speech clarity, eating confidence, and even sleep quality.

    💡 The takeaway

    Breathing seems automatic, and it is! but how we breathe matters. Mouth breathing and open-mouth posture can quietly shape how a child speaks, eats, and grows.

    By noticing early signs, addressing underlying causes, and building supportive habits, you can help your child move toward stronger, clearer speech and more comfortable mealtimes.

    Just like every area of development, progress starts with connection, patience, and gentle consistency, one calm breath at a time.

    What is Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) and what does a Speech Therapist do?

    Speech and language therapists provide treatment, support and care for children and adults who have difficulties with communication, eating, drinking and swallowing. We help children and adults who have problems speaking and communicating.

    How to find the perfect therapist for my child/client:

    There are a huge number of speech and language difficulties, or feeding and swallowing problems that we can help with and the first thing to think about is what age group the person is you are seeking help for. Most SLT’s specialise in a range of disorders and treatments and they often treat specific age ranges. This could be, for instance, very young children up to 3 years, or school aged children, adolescents or just adults. Once you have narrowed it down to age and general area of difficulty you can then go and seek your perfect SLT match.

    Generally it is my view that SLT’s with a narrow area of specialist interest are most likely to help you better if the problem you or your child/adult is having is significant and/or profound. For example, if your child has a very severe stutter/stammer but is otherwise developing fine and has good skills all round, then I would recommend to look for an SLT who only specialises in stammering/stuttering, or has only a small range of other specialist areas related to stammering , such as speech and language delay.

    The reason is that it is a tall order for any professional to stay up to date with latest research, latest clinical developments and training for more than, say, five distinct areas of interest.

    However, a more generalist Speech therapist who has lots of experience in many different areas could be a very good option for your child or adult who has more general speech and language delay in a number of areas, perhaps a global delay or a syndrome which means that their learning is delayed in general. It also means that your child might benefit from a Generalist SLT because they have many more tools in their SLT bag and your child might need a variety of approaches for several areas.

    A good place to start is www.asltip.com which is the Association for Independent Speech and Language Therapists in the UK. Any SLT registered with ASLTIP will also be registered with the HCPC (Health Care Professionals Council), as well as RCSLT (Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists). These two important UK professional regulatory bodies ensure all its members are fully qualified, and are fully up to date with latest developments within their areas of work.

    Here you can enter your post code and look for a therapist near you and you can look for specific problems such as stammering for example and narrow down your search. Most therapists have a website which you can then access too. I would recommend you speak to a few therapists on your list and then go with the person you had the best rapport with. You and the therapist will be spending a lot of time together and you will need to feel that you trust them and that you can relax into the process.

    This is an amazing way to help children with the following difficulties:

    • Social Communication Difficulties, Autistic Spectrum Disorders and
    • Speech and Language Delay – for children under the age of 4 years old, this is my preferred way of working because it is so very effective and proven to work. If your child is not developing words or not interacting, has reduced attention and listening and you feel is not progressing or, in fact even regressing, then this way of working is the best.     In brief, what’s so great about Parent Coaching is that it empowers you the parent to help your child in daily life! This is where speech, language and social communication develop typically, in a naturalistic way and environment. Simple steps and strategies are discussed and demonstrated every week and you are encouraged to use these strategies with your child in daily routines: getting dressed, having breakfast, on the school run, whilst out in the park or shopping or simply playing at home or having dinner or bath time. Whatever your family routine happens to be, every strategy I teach you will help create a responsive communication environment; generally, if your child is able to develop speech then they will do so in direct response to your changed interaction style.

    I love working with children of all ages on developing their speech sounds. Whether your child has a lisp, or a couple of tricky sounds they simply cannot produce quite right, or perhaps your child is really unintelligible because he/she is having lots of different sound errors, making it really hard to understand them. I typically work on getting “most bang for your buck” , meaning I address the sounds that cause the most problems and, therefore, when they are fixed your child/person’s speech becomes that much clearer fairly quickly.

    Having worked for over 20 years in NHS Child Development Clinics and Special Needs Schools I trained and worked with feeding and swallowing difficulties early on in my SLT career. I later trained as a Lactation Consultant and so I am well placed helping and support all types of Infant feeding, both breast or bottle, as well as toddler weaning. I aim to ensure that your little one swallows the right kind of foods and drinks for their abilities. I am experienced in managing and supporting children with physical needs and mobility problems, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome or any other type of syndrome or presentation.

    What does a speech therapy session look like?

    All sessions differ slightly depending on the age of the child and the nature of the difficulties.

    However, mostly our sessions look like FUN! After arrival and washing hands we tend to start off with the tricky work straight away whilst our child still has energy and the will to engage. So, for speech work we will focus on the target sounds first: this could be sitting at a table doing work sheets together, playing games using the target sound and really any type of activity that gives us around 70-100 repeats of the target pattern. For example, a child who is working towards saying a ‘K’ at the end of the word I will try and get around 100 productions of words like: pack/sack/lick/ pick/bike/lake and so on.

    Then we often play a fun game where I might try for a ‘rhyming’ activity or other sound awareness type activities, for perhaps 10 minutes and within that time I aim to trial the next sound pattern we need to improve on; I will test which sound your child can do with help from me. During he last 10 minutes we might look at a book, again listening to and producing whatever sound we are working on. If I did not get 100 sounds earlier on in the session I will try and practice them now as part of the story. In total I aim to have about 40-45 minutes of activities, all aimed at the target sound we are working on.

    What does a Coaching session look like?

    During a Parent Coaching Session we meet online for about an hour and we discuss how the week has been for you trying out the strategies. Typically parents start off recalling what went well, what progress was made and what had been more tricky. We work through it all, and then follow on to the next strategies: I will show you examples and demonstrations of each strategy and I will get you to think about how you can use this with your child and in what situation you might use it. I will explain what we are doing and what the purpose is. You might want to write down what you are going to work on for the week. Over the course of about sessions we can cover all the major strategies that are proven to help kickstart spoken language and/or help your child to connect more with you. Through that connection spoken words most often develop.

    Books, Stories And Colourful Semantics

    Many of my students have difficulties telling stories. When looking at a book together, even books they love and have seen many times, they often struggle to understand what they are reading and cannot therefore retell the story in any sequence. A great method I often use with those students is called Colourful Semantics.

    What is Colourful Semantics?

    Colourful Semantics is an approach aimed at helping children develop grammar and meaning of phrases and sentences. We help children identify WHO is the subject in a story, what is he/she/it DOING to WHAT and WHERE. There are lots of colour coded stages but we tend to start with the basic 4:

    WHO = ORANGE

    DOING = YELLOW

    WHAT = GREEN

    WHERE = BLUE

    Once a student is accomplished at this level, we move on to different colour codes for describing words (adjectives), connecting words (with/together/and/therefore) feeling words (PINK), timing words (BROWN) eg. when, tomorrow, last week etc.

    Colourful Semantics is a really useful method and helps children to organise their sentences. It also helps me knowing how to guide a student in thinking about the story.

    The approach can be used with children with a range of Speech and Language Needs, such as:

    • Developmental Delay / Disorder
    • Autistic Spectrum Condition
    • Down Syndrome
    • Any other syndromes and related speech and language delays
    • General Literacy difficulties

    There are a wide range of benefits to using this approach and I use it in my therapeutic work with children of around 3 years plus. Below is a little video which shows how I use it with this student who has general language difficulties associated with Autism. One of the main benefits with this student is that seeing the Cue Cards helps her to use a much wider range of vocabulary than she would ordinarily generate. Her sentences are getting longer and she is more able to answer questions. In general, I find it useful to help with storytelling and to guide us through the story in a sequence.

    There are many on-line games these days that have incorporated the Colourful Semantics Approach. Once a child is familiar with the basic colour scheme then gradually the visual prompts can be reduced to using verbal prompts.

    Holiday disruptions & New Year routines: How to support your child’s feeding, communication and regulation over the festive season

    Holiday disruptions & New Year routines

    The festive season is a wonderful time for many families, but for children with feeding challenges, sensory differences, or autism traits, December can feel overwhelming. Changes in routine, busier environments, travel, new foods, disrupted sleep, and well-meaning relatives giving ‘advice’ can all affect a child’s feeding, communication and overall regulation.

    As a speech and language therapist specialising in Early Years, I see the same pattern each year: children often make progress during the term, only to struggle in late December when everything becomes unpredictable. The good news? With a bit of preparation, children can not only cope better, but they can actually make significant developmental gains during the holidays.

    This blog will help you feel confident, supported and prepared for the transition from ‘festive mode’ to a smoother, regulated start in January.

    1. Why routines matter so much. Especially now

    Young children thrive on predictability. For neurodivergent children or those with sensory, feeding or communication needs, routine isn’t just helpful: it’s the backbone of emotional regulation.

    In December, typical patterns change:

    • Mealtimes shift or become irregular
    • Bedtime slides
    • New foods appear
    • Loud social gatherings overwhelm
    • Travel disrupts naps and comfort routines
    • Therapies pause
    • Childcare closes

    Any one of these can lead to feeding refusals, more meltdowns, increased stimming, reduced communication attempts or regression in speech sounds.

    It’s simply the nervous system responding to too much change.

    2. Protecting feeding progress during holiday mealtimes

    My last blog and insta post have a nice social story on festive meals. They are often the trickiest part of the season for families I support. Children with sensory-based feeding challenges, or ARFID traits may find holiday foods completely unfamiliar and challenging.

    What helps:

    • Offer one ‘safe food’ at every meal
    • Keep portion sizes tiny
    • Use the ‘buffet rule’
    • Rehearse tricky moments

    3. Supporting communication when routines are disrupted

    Holiday time actually offers more opportunities for communication, just in different ways.

    Strategies:

    • Slow down and follow your child’s lead
    • Use everyday routines as language opportunities
    • Keep AAC going even if casually

    4. Understanding holiday ‘regressions’ and know they’re temporary

    This is almost always due to nervous system overload. Children don’t truly ‘lose’ skills; they temporarily prioritise regulation over learning.

    5. A gentle January reset: How to start the New Year smoothly

    • Re-establish predictability early
    • Return to preferred foods
    • Book early support if needed
    • Focus on regulation first

    Halloween without the tears: Supporting children through the Spooky Season

    For many families, Halloween is an exciting time filled with costumes, decorations, and sweets. But for children who are sensory sensitive, whether they’re autistic, have sensory processing differences, or simply find new experiences overwhelming, Halloween can feel like a night of chaos rather than fun.

    The bright lights, unexpected noises, strange textures, and social pressure to ‘join in’ can quickly become too much. The good news? With some thoughtful planning and gentle support, you can make Halloween a positive and manageable experience for your child.

    Understanding sensory overload

    Sensory overload happens when a child’s brain receives more sensory input than it can process. This might mean:

    • Costumes that itch, squeeze, or feel strange on the skin.
    • Loud sounds like doorbells, fireworks, or shrieking decorations.
    • Crowds and unpredictability during trick-or-treating.
    • Strong smells or tastes from face paint or unfamiliar sweets.

    When overloaded, children may cry, cover their ears, hide, run away, or ‘shut down.’ These reactions aren’t ‘bad behaviour’, they’re signs of distress. The goal isn’t to eliminate Halloween fun, but to adjust it to your child’s comfort level.

    Step 1: Choose costumes wisely

    Costumes are often the biggest trigger. Scratchy fabrics, tight seams, or masks that restrict breathing can be unbearable for some children.

    Try these tips:

    • Go sensory-friendly: Use soft, breathable fabrics and remove tags. Many retailers now sell sensory-safe costumes.
    • Test it early: Let your child wear the outfit around the house before Halloween. If it’s too much, simplify — maybe themed pyjamas or a favourite T-shirt with Halloween accessories.
    • Skip the mask: Face paint can be equally challenging, always test on a small patch of skin first. A comfortable headband or hat might be enough to feel ‘in costume.’

    Remember, participation doesn’t require perfection. Your child can still ‘be’ their favourite character without a full costume.

    Step 2: Plan your Halloween environment

    Before the big day, think about what parts of Halloween your child enjoys — and what might overwhelm them.

    At home:

    • Keep decorations minimal and predictable. Avoid motion-activated sounds or flashing lights.
    • Practise knocking at your own front door or saying ‘trick or treat’ with a trusted adult.
    • Have a ‘quiet space’ ready, a cosy corner or room where your child can retreat if things get too intense.

    If you’re going out:

    • Choose earlier, quieter times for trick-or-treating.
    • Visit a few familiar houses instead of the whole street.
    • Bring ear defenders or noise-cancelling headphones.
    • Have a clear exit plan if your child needs a break.

    Sometimes, watching from the window and handing out sweets can be just as enjoyable! it still offers social participation without sensory overload.

    Step 3: Prepare socially and emotionally

    Halloween involves a lot of unexpected social interaction: strangers at the door, unfamiliar greetings, and different rules.

    Help your child by:

    • Using visuals or stories: Read picture books about Halloween or make a short social story about what will happen.
    • Role-playing: Practise saying ‘Trick or treat!’ or handing out sweets in a fun, low-pressure way.
    • Labelling feelings: Explain that it’s okay to feel nervous or to take a break if something feels ‘too loud’ or ‘too much.’

    Children feel safer when they know what to expect. Predictability reduces anxiety and makes participation more enjoyable.

    Step 4: Rethink the treats

    Not every child enjoys sweets; some dislike sticky textures or strong flavours. Offer non-food alternatives like stickers, glow sticks, or small toys.

    If your child has feeding difficulties or oral sensitivities, it’s okay to opt out of the traditional treats entirely. They can still join in by giving treats or decorating treat bags instead.

    It’s also helpful to prepare your child that others might offer sweets they don’t want. Practising polite ‘no thank you’ responses can make these moments easier. (check out my symbol download for children who struggle to speak)

    Step 5: Celebrate your way

    Halloween doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s version. Maybe your family watches a ‘not-too-scary’ film, carves pumpkins, or does a flashlight treasure hunt indoors. The goal is joyful connection, not conformity.

    A calm, happy experience, even if it looks simple from the outside builds positive associations your child will carry into future celebrations.

    In summary

    Halloween can be full of sensory surprises, but with empathy, planning, and flexibility, it doesn’t have to end in tears.

    The more you adapt to your child’s sensory needs, the more they learn that they are safe, understood, and included not just at Halloween, but in every celebration.

    As with all things in speech and feeding development, progress starts with connection. When children feel regulated and supported, communication and confidence follow.

    My child is hard to understand at school age. Should I be concerned?

    Many parents notice speech errors when their children are toddlers. At that stage it often feels quite normal. Young children are still learning the sounds of their language, and those early mispronunciations can be very endearing.

    But as children grow older, parents sometimes begin to wonder:

    ‘Should my child still be speaking like this?’

    A common concern I hear from families is that their child is still difficult to understand even after starting school. Sometimes it is a parent who notices it first. Other times it is a teacher who gently mentions that classmates occasionally struggle to understand what a child is saying.

    When this happens, parents naturally wonder whether it is something their child will grow out of, or whether some extra support might help.

    When should children’s speech be clear?

    Children learn speech sounds gradually over several years. Some sounds develop earlier, while others take longer to master.

    By the time children reach five to six years of age, most of their speech should be clear enough for unfamiliar adults to understand. There may still be a few tricky sounds developing (such as /R/ or /TH/), but overall speech should be fairly easy to follow.

    If a child is frequently difficult to understand at school age, it can sometimes indicate that a speech sound difficulty has persisted beyond the stage when it would normally resolve on its own.

    Why some children remain hard to understand

    There are several reasons why speech clarity may still be developing in older children.

    Phonological patterns

    Some children continue to use speech patterns that are typical of younger children. For example:

    • saying ‘tat’ instead of ‘cat’
    • saying ‘doe’ instead of ‘go’
    • leaving sounds out of words

    These patterns are called phonological processes. They are a normal part of early speech development, but when they persist into the school years they can make speech difficult for others to understand.

    Difficulty producing specific sounds

    Other children may have difficulty producing certain individual sounds clearly. This might include sounds such as:

    • /S/
    • /SH/
    • /R/
    • /TH/

    These difficulties are called articulation difficulties.

    A child might understand exactly what they want to say but find it hard to produce the sound accurately with their tongue, lips or airflow.

    Motor speech planning challenges

    For some children, the difficulty lies in the planning and coordination of the movements needed for speech.

    Speech requires very precise timing between the tongue, lips, jaw and breath. If the brain finds it difficult to organise these movements consistently, speech can sound unclear or inconsistent.

    In some cases this may relate to Childhood Apraxia of Speech, although only a full assessment can determine this.

    Why clarity matters for school-age children

    Speech clarity becomes particularly important once children start school.

    At this stage, children are:

    • Answering questions in class
    • Talking with friends
    • Reading aloud
    • Developing confidence in communication

    When speech is difficult to understand, children sometimes become more hesitant to speak, particularly in group situations.

    This can affect confidence and participation, even when the child has lots of ideas they would like to share.

    The good news: speech can improve

    The encouraging news is that speech sound difficulties can often improve significantly with the right support.

    Speech therapy focuses on helping children:

    • Learn how sounds are produced
    • Practise accurate speech movements
    • Understand how sounds change meaning in words
    • Build consistency through structured practice

    Different children benefit from different therapy approaches. Some need support with phonological patterns, while others benefit from more motor-based practice that strengthens speech coordination.

    Often therapy combines several strategies to support the child’s individual speech profile.

    When to seek advice

    If your child is already at school and you find that people outside the family often struggle to understand them, it can be helpful to seek advice from a speech and language therapist.

    A detailed assessment can help identify:

    • Which sounds are causing difficulty
    • Whether patterns such as fronting or sound substitutions are present
    • Whether motor planning challenges may be contributing
    • Which therapy approach is likely to be most effective

    Early support can help children develop clearer speech and greater confidence in communication.

    Every child’s speech journey is different

    Speech development is not the same for every child. Some children master speech sounds quickly, while others need a little more guidance along the way.

    The important thing is that support is available when children need it.

    With the right strategies and practice, many children make excellent progress and develop speech that is clearer, more confident and easier for others to understand.
