LAMP Words for Life: A revolutionary AAC system

Introduction

When working with non-speaking or minimally speaking children the LAMP Words for Life AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) system is my absolute go-to every time. For me it stands out as a revolutionary system that has transformed the lives of many of my non-speaking students. LAMP Words for Life is a ROBUST, comprehensive language-based AAC system and it is designed to help any user to express their thoughts, feelings, and needs effectively, thereby achieving maximal independence in their daily life. A winner!

There is a whole host of AAC apps and systems out there and each has their own advantages and benefits for sure. I have tried a good number of other systems. I do also like certain features of other AAC systems for sure. For example GRID: I love the versatility of GRID and the ease of editing the system is fantastic.

Why I think it works so well

However, strangely I always return to LAMP when push comes to shove. I have thought very carefully about it and so here are my thoughts on why this is and why it works so well:

  1. Intuitive interface: LAMP Words for Life features are for me really user-friendly and it is easy to navigate and understand (this is very important for non-techy people). I think it makes sense and it is accessible to users of all ages and abilities. Yes the pictures are a little bit different to other symbol systems we use, especially here in the UK to be sure, and this is one of the reasons why it is good to have a variety of systems available, so that we can cater for students who are used to other symbols or do very well with specific symbol core boards. I have learned though that the pictures are not that important when using LAMP because the entire system is based on MOTOR PLANNING. And once one knows the motor plan to find a picture it is in our brain and we do not look at the picture any more. So, the motor plan to find a word is much more important when using LAMP than worrying about what the picture looks like.
  2. Comprehensive vocabulary: The system offers a vast vocabulary of words and phrases, covering a wide range of topics and contexts. This enables users to express themselves effectively on a variety of subjects. That said, almost every time I use LAMP there is a little word I need and it’s not on there. But that’s not a problem: for example, I was looking for ‘sunglasses’ the other day. Sure, there is ‘sun’ and ‘glasses’ but that would be two separate motor plans and for my student that would be too many for now, so it was very easy to quickly add the new word ‘sunglasses’ under ‘accessories’ or ‘beach wear’ — I added it within less than one minute. Likewise, there are a ton of words which cater for the US market, and I tend to change them to fit the UK vocabulary like ‘nappy’ for ‘diaper’. Or I delete them entirely if I feel my child will never need to use a certain word like ‘conference’ or ‘nun’. PS: should they get to a point of using the system as an adult independently then these words can surely be added again, or if my student ever moves to the US then the words can be changed back to US terms again without any problem.
  3. Grammar support: LAMP provides built-in grammar support, helping users construct grammatically correct sentences. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with language processing difficulties. But what I love about the way LAMP is organised here is that, in contrast with other systems I have used, it does not PREDICT what you want to say, it lets the user decide and find the right grammatical structure. I appreciate this because, just like I hate my phone or email offering predictive text or offer corrections to my words, I really do not get the systems that offer automatically a grammar change which mostly I don’t want. Where that is the case, I am often confused and hindered in finding the correct wording. I love the simplicity of LAMP and at the same the complexity that can be achieved gradually with practice. LAMP is fully designed to enable a user to build up not only vocabulary but a full language system. On a course recently I was able to hear adult LAMP users speaking to the audience in full and quick grammatically well-rounded sentences on a host of topics.
  4. Customisation: LAMP can be customised to meet the individual needs of each user. This includes options for adjusting the vocabulary, layout, and accessibility features. It is not as easy to edit as GRID I will say and that can cause me a little bit of frustration at times, but on balance I still vastly prefer the system as a whole. It can also be customised quite well for Gestalt Language Processors. It takes a little bit of practice and thinking about how best to do this but I have found a way that works well which I demonstrate in the short video clip.
  5. Community support: LAMP Words for Life has a thriving community of users on Facebook and this is so valuable and inspiring. Therapists and families of LAMP users alike share experiences, provide resources, and offer encouragement. This can be a valuable source of support for both users and their families.
  6. Comprehensive support: LAMP Words for Life offers quick and thorough support services, including training, resources, and ongoing assistance. This is invaluable and reassuring for both users and caregivers.
  7. Research-based: The development of LAMP Words for Life is based on extensive research and evidence-based practices. This ensures that the system is grounded in sound scientific principles.

    How we can help shape smooth consonant blends

    For many children, especially those navigating Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), the challenge isn’t just making individual sounds. It’s the ‘speech gymnastics’ required to move smoothly from one sound to the next.

    You might notice that instead of saying ‘Train’, your child says ‘Ter-ain’, or for ‘Frog’, you hear ‘Fer-og’. That sneaky little ‘uh’ sound in the middle is what we call a schwa vowel. In the world of speech science, this is known as epenthesis. It’s essentially a ‘repair strategy’ the brain uses to break up a difficult cluster of sounds into two easier pieces.

    While it might seem like a small detail, that tiny vowel makes a big difference in how fluent and clear a child’s speech sounds. In today’s post (and the video below), I am working with my student on ironing out that schwa by focusing on co-articulation—the art of getting the mouth ready for the second sound while still finishing the first.

    The ‘best friends’ strategy

    To help my student understand this complex movement, I use visual cues and a story. There are many ways to portray two sounds living closely together, but for this session, I used the ‘Best Friends’ story.

    In our story, the /T/ and the /R/ are older brother best friends who want to play together. The ‘schwa’ sound is represented by a little sister who keeps trying to jump in the middle of their game! Because my student has a younger sister, this scenario was instantly familiar and helped him visualise why we needed to ‘close the gap’ between those two sounds.

    Alternative methods I often use:

    Beyond stories, I often use other visual and tactile methods to show the closeness of two sounds:

    • The sliding finger: I draw two dots on a paper—one for /T/ and one for /R/. We slide a finger quickly from one to the other. I might say, ‘Don’t let the ‘uh’ monster jump in the gap!’
    • The rubber band: We stretch a rubber band as we speak. I tell my student that the word is one long, smooth stretch, rather than two separate ‘pops’.
    • Visual cues for ‘quiet’ sounds: I often put my finger to my lips or tap my throat to remind a child to keep the first sound voiceless. If the voice stays ‘off’ during the /T/, it’s much harder for that schwa vowel to creep in.

    The importance of ‘pure’ modelling

    A major hurdle in clearing up these blends is how we, as adults, model sounds. Often, when teaching the alphabet, we say ‘Kuh’, ‘Puh’ or ‘Tuh’. But if you listen closely, you’re actually adding a vowel! If a child learns that /K/ says ‘Kuh’, it’s only natural they will say ‘Kuh-R’ for /KR/.

    To give your child a cleaner blueprint, try modeling ‘pure’ sounds. Think of whispering rather than talking:

    • The /K/ sound: A short, sharp burst of air from the back of the throat. No voice! (A quiet /K/ click).
    • The /P/ sound: Just a ‘pop’ of air from the lips. If your throat vibrates, the vowel has snuck in.
    • The /T/ sound: A tiny tap of the tongue behind the teeth.

    Why is this important?

    You might ask, ‘If I can still understand them, does it really matter if they say “ter-ain”?

    The goal of speech therapy isn’t just functional communication; it’s building phonological awareness. When a child adds extra vowels, it can eventually impact their literacy. If they hear ‘ter-ain,’ they are much more likely to eventually spell it as ‘terain’ or ‘traint’.

    By helping them master these clusters through co-articulation now, we are setting them up for success in reading and writing. And we are giving them the confidence to speak with ease.

    Why Imitation is so Important

    Target Activities and Games For Kids

    Why imitation is so important and how can speech and language therapy help children who struggle to imitate?

    Imitation or copying starts in early infancy. When we observe a young baby and his parent or familiar adult we can see clearly and frequently that the baby will be intently looking at adult’s face and try to copy their facial expressions, smiles and all those funny baby sounds we often make with young babies.

    These sounds are called “motherese” and are the beginnings of a little conversation between the parent and the baby. The “conversation can go back and forth for a long time and include sounds, as well as facial expressions.

    A little later on, once the baby can crawl and sit up unaided the copying then goes on to include toys and objects. Mum or Dad will show their toddler how to use a drum or how to put a little train on the wooden tracks and the toddler will try and copy this. They may not succeed and be a little clumsy perhaps but the act of copying anything and everything their favourite adult does is typically seen throughout the day.

    We all know and have laughed at mums or dads saying; ssshhh don’t say that in front of the baby he/she will copy you, watch your mouth! (as dad is swearing at the broken radiator….)

    This imitation goes on for years and includes eventually of course little words, more words, putting words together and then creating sentences, all the while our toddler is listening to how their adults speak, not only what they say but how they say it. This is how dialects and accents can be transmitted easily from parent /family to child.

    Copying in Children with Autism

    We know that children with autism often struggle to imitate. We see children on the spectrum typically having great difficulty to copy adults or children; this can be seen in very reduced play with their peers in nursery for example.

    Children with autism tend to have reduced joint attention and engagement with others and need to develop the ability and awareness to copy others in order to then engage more jointly with others.

    During my coaching work with parents I teach step by step how to help a child who struggles to imitate:

    We look at all the researched skills and actions that adults can take to help their little one to copy, starting with close observation of their child’s interests, then following and including their child’s play and copying/imitating their child in how they play. I teach steps in a graduated way so that it is easy to see the progress and joyful to have the results at the end.

    The results are clear to see over time: our children on the spectrum learn to imitate actions, with objects and gestures, then sounds and words. Alongside this increased imitation skill the child can then develop more joint attention and engagement.

    The power of containment: A therapeutic approach for autistic children

    The practice of wrapping or swaddling children, often referred to as ‘containment,’ has been used for centuries to soothe and comfort infants. I use this therapeutic approach with autistic children at the London Speech and Feeding Practice. While it might seem counterintuitive, the act of being tightly wrapped can provide significant benefits for children who struggle with sensory processing, emotional regulation, and communication.

    Understanding sensory processing and autism

    Autistic persons often experience challenges with sensory processing, which is their brain’s ability to interpret and respond to sensory information. This can lead to sensory overload or under-responsivity. Containment can be a valuable tool in helping children regulate their sensory input.

    To summarise, here are some of the benefits of containment:

    • Sensory Regulation:
      • Provides deep pressure input: The tight, enveloping sensation of being wrapped can provide deep pressure input, which is calming and organising for many children.
      • Reduces sensory overload: By creating a controlled sensory environment, containment can help to reduce overstimulation and promote a sense of safety.
    • Emotional Regulation:
      • Containment creates a sense of security: Being wrapped tightly can mimic the feeling of being in the womb, providing a sense of security and comfort.
      • Facilitates calming: The deep pressure input can help to calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety.
    • Improved Body Awareness:
      • Enhances proprioception: Containment can improve the child’s awareness of their body in space, which is essential for motor development and sensory integration. I often provide extra pressure on a child’s arms and legs sticking out of the yoga mat; this helps my child understand where their limbs are in space: I can feel my legs and I can feel my arms and I can feel where they are right now, i.e. they are under Sonja’s hand, I can feel them.
    • Facilitates Communication – and this is obviously where I come in as a Speech and Language Therapist:
      • Swaddling creates a safe space: When a child feels calm and secure, they are more likely to engage in communication.
      • Enhances joint attention: The shared experience of being wrapped can foster joint attention, which is essential for language development. You can see this one in my highlights where I swaddle my student in the yoga mat (picture above). She absolutely loves it, and what is more she is calm and steady when usually this child likes to be on the move constantly. Here we have a wonderful moment of joint engagement. She looks at me, she can listen to what I say or sing, and she can tell me in her own way to carry on rolling her or to carry on singing or providing calming pressure to her legs and arms or to stop.

    A few pointers for when you try this at home: How to practise containment safely and effectively

    • Create a safe environment: Ensure the wrapping material is soft, breathable, and free from any hazards.
    • Observe your child’s cues: Pay attention to your child’s body language and verbal cues to determine their comfort level.
    • Respect your child’s boundaries: If your child shows signs of distress, stop the containment immediately – this might seem obvious but sometimes we adults get so carried away with some ‘great idea’ that we have seen work elsewhere. And so we can be a little too ‘determined’ sometimes to ‘make it happen’… perhaps this rings a bell with some of my readers.
    • MAKE IT FUN: Start carefully and take it step by step. See if the student is having a nice time. It is all about trust and therefore it might not work the very first time you do it.

    It’s important to remember that containment is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Some children may respond better to other sensory-based interventions. However, for many autistic children containment can be a valuable tool in their journey towards improved communication and emotional regulation.

    Chaining: A powerful tool for phonological development

    Understanding chaining

    Chaining is a therapeutic technique I like to use in my speech therapy work with children who have Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) or phonological speech sound difficulties. It helps to break down a complex target behaviour into smaller, more manageable steps. By systematically teaching and reinforcing each step, I can help my students achieve their communication goals.

    There are two types of chaining: Forward and backward chaining

    Today I am going to show and talk about backward chaining. This technique involves starting with the last step and working backward to the first. This approach can be particularly effective for children with persistent speech sound difficulties where combining consonants into clusters, such as /BL/ or /FR/ or /SHR/ is very difficult.

    Backward chaining allows my student to experience immediate success and build his confidence.

    In my video I show you how I applied backward chaining to the words ‘Shriek’, ‘Shrub’, ‘Shrimp’ etc

    My student struggles with both the /SH/ and the /R/ sounds and we have been working on both sounds for some weeks now. He has mild Childhood Apraxia of Speech and he has difficulties with coordinating his tongue movements, breathing and using his jaw effectively to make words. His sound repertoire has grown a lot since we started working together last year. Today in this session I show you how we pulled both the sound /SH/ together with /REEK/ to make ‘SHRIEK’. I love using the pictures and therapy materials from Adventures in Speech Pathology.

    This is also part of the Complexity approach which I will explain in a separate blog post.

    • Step 1 (not shown in the video): I explain what the word means; I find that when my student understands what a word means he is much better at saying it. It increases his confidence and motivation to say a word that he knows the meaning of. Often this student does not tell me that he does not know what a word means, so I always remind myself to check that out first.
    • Step 2 (not shown in the video): We do a little rhyming game and think about what any one word rhymes with: ‘Shriek’ – ‘meek’, ‘weak’, ‘seek’.
    • Step 3: I show my student that there are two parts to this word /reek/ and the sound /SH/.
    • Step 3: We practise the easier part: /reek/ /reek/ /reek/.
    • Step 4: We add the /SH/ sound and pull it together to make our target word ‘Shriek’.

    /REEK/ /REEK/ /REEK/ + /SH/ = ‘SHRIEK’
    /RUB/ /RUB/ /RUB/ + /SH/ = ‘SHRUB’
    /RUG/ /RUG/ /RUG/ + /SH/ = ‘SHRUG’

    By breaking down the word into smaller, manageable steps, my student can focus on each syllable individually, get that right and then gradually build up to the full word. This approach can help to reduce frustration and increase motivation.

    Forward chaining

    Forward chaining is the same process but in reverse: we start with the front sound or syllable and work forward towards the next/last part of the word:

    /SH/ + /REEK/ = ‘SHRIEK’
    /SH/ + /RUB/ = ‘SHRUB’
    /SH/ + /RUG/ = ‘SHRUG’

    Benefits of chaining

    • Increased motivation: By starting with the last step, my student experiences success, which boosts his motivation to continue trying to say the word and trying other words.
    • Reduced frustration: Breaking down the target behaviour into smaller steps can make the task less overwhelming, reducing frustration and anxiety.
    • Improved confidence: As the little learner masters each of the step, his confidence and self-esteem increases. Again, this leads to increased motivation.
    • Faster learning: By focusing on the final step first, and practising lots of chaining (forward and backward), a student can quickly learn to generalise to other words.

    Backward chaining (and forward chaining) is a really great tool for teaching complex speech sounds and words to children with phonological disorders.

    Milestones of autistic children: Crawling, walking, and talking

    For all children every milestone achieved is a testament to the unique and intricate process unfolding within each young mind. For autistic children, this journey may present a distinct pattern, with some reaching developmental milestones like crawling, walking, and talking later than their neurotypical peers. Let’s have a look into the fascinating realm of Autism and explore why some autistic children might crawl, walk, and talk later, shedding light on the underlying factors contributing to this unique way of developing.

    1. Individual Pacing:

    Child development is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Each child, whether neurotypical or autistic, has a unique timeline for achieving milestones. Autistic children, like any other children, follow their own pacing. This individual rhythm might lead them to focus on one set of skills before they progress to others. Like some neurotypical children might focus on talking earlier than walking, autistic children might prioritise other areas before crawling or talking.

    2. Neurodevelopmental Complexity:

    The human brain is a remarkable entity, with a bewildering array of interconnected processes that lead to us achieving our developmental milestones. Autistic children often have variations in “neural wiring”, which can impact the balance between gross motor skills (crawling, walking) and fine motor skills. Speech and language acquisition falls under fine motor skills and may be momentarily disrupted due to the divergent neurological pathways at play in autism.

    2. Sensory Processing Differences:

    One of the hallmarks of autism is altered sensory processing. Autistic children often experience sensory stimuli differently than their neurotypical peers. This heightened or diminished sensitivity can influence a child’s desire or ability to engage in activities like crawling and walking. The sensation of movement while crawling or walking, for instance, might be overwhelming for some autistic children, causing them to either avoid or delay these activities.

    3. Visual-Spatial Abilities:

    Autistic children and adults frequently display excellent visual-spatial abilities. This strength might lead some children to focus more on activities that engage these skills, potentially delaying their engagement with activities like walking or talking. As they navigate their environment and process information visually, they might naturally invest more time in activities that stimulate this particular cognitive ability and strength.

    4. Communication Challenges:

    For many autistic children, speaking can be a really complex and difficult endeavour. Communication delays are a common feature of autism. This can affect both receptive and expressive language development. While some children might be physically capable of crawling or walking, they may not yet have the tools to communicate their desires and intentions. This leads to a temporary focus on non-speaking forms of expression. This does not mean that they do not communicate at all. But autistic individuals often start out using jargoning or echolalia as a form of communication as well as behaviours and physical forms of communication.

    5. Executive Functioning and Motor Skills:

    Executive functioning, or abilities for planning, organising, and carrying out tasks, can vary in autistic children. These skills are crucial for activities like crawling, walking, and talking, which need coordination and planning. About 40% of autistic persons have a motor planning difficulty.

    6. Intense Interests and Routines:

    Autistic children often develop intense interests in specific subjects, sometimes to the exclusion of other activities. These interests might become their primary mode of engagement. They might side-line milestones like crawling, walking, or talking. The mostly rigid adherence to routines and preferences might cause them to allocate more time to their preferred activities. This delays their engagement with other developmental tasks.

    How can Speech and Language Therapy help:

    Support and Intervention:

    Early intervention and regular Speech and Language Therapy play a pivotal role in the developmental journey of autistic children. Therapies tailored to individual needs can aid in bridging the gaps between milestones. Occupational therapy, for example, can help address sensory sensitivities and motor skill challenges that might impact crawling and walking. Speech therapy can help communication development, gradually bridging the gap between non-verbal expressions and spoken language.

    For example, we now know that echolalia or jargoning of longer phrases with intonation, repeating scripts from favourite tv shows or songs have many meanings and communicative functions. For example, a child who utters long strings of echolalic utterances, often difficult to understand, might want to do any one of the following:

    • Comment
    • greet
    • ask a question
    • make a request
    • express surprise
    • negate something.

    We now understand that the way to support a child with echolalia is to acknowledge all utterances and try and find out what the meaning is behind these scripts. This is very supportive. Over time it will lead a child to move on to understanding and saying more clear and self-generated language.     Conclusion

    In conclusion, the journey of an autistic child’s development is a testament to the uniqueness and complexity of the human mind. The delays or differences in achieving milestones like crawling, walking, and talking can be attributed to a range of factors, including

    • sensory processing variations,
    • and communication challenges.

    It’s crucial to recognise that these delays are not indicative of a lack of potential, but rather a manifestation of the intricate interplay between an autistic child’s strengths and challenges. By embracing these differences and providing tailored support, we can help each autistic child unfold their potential at their own pace.

    Supporting children and families living with verbal dyspraxia

    “It’s brill-i-ant, it’s brill-ant, it’s brillnt”

    Have you ever wondered why children may pronounce a word correctly one minute and in the next breath they struggle to say the same word? It’s equally as frustrating for you as it is for your child. The biggest question of all is WHY? Why does this happen and what causes it? Whilst there are many explanations. When it persists, it might be a condition called verbal dyspraxia.

    What is verbal dyspraxia

    Verbal dyspraxia is a neurological motor speech disorder that affects the coordination and planning of muscle movements that are needed for speech production. A child may have difficulty making the precise movements needed for speech, which may result in inconsistent and unintelligible speech. Children may also have trouble sequencing sounds and syllables, producing speech sounds accurately, and coordinating the movements of their articulators (e.g., lips, tongue, teeth, jaw). This can lead to a range of speech errors (including sound distortions, substitutions, omissions, and difficulty with rhythm and prosody).

    We know that these speech errors, and not being able to get a message across, can be frustrating for children with speech difficulties. Can you imagine talking and limited people understanding you? It’s so tough on children and the people trying to communicate with them.

    Creating a person-centred therapy plan is vital. This allows your child to stay motivated, as intervention is likely to be long term. This planning may include favourite words to use during their hobby or favourite activity, or person-centred goals such as ‘giving Alexa an instruction’.

    Children with verbal dyspraxia can have several different ways of producing words, which often makes it trickier for them as there’s no consistent pattern to work with. So, we’ve put together some top tips to support their communication and make their (and your) lives a little easier in the process.

    Ten ways to make communication easier for your child with verbal dyspraxia

    • Have a list of frequently used words and practise this set. Little and often is best!
    • Use cued articulation to support speech production (ask your Speech and Language Therapist for the gestures)
    • Give time and use active listening. This means showing interest and trying not to think about what is on your never ending ‘to do’ list
    • Reduce frustration in any way that you can. This might mean allowing your child to demonstrate using gestures rather than speech. You might also give top tips for other adults or children who communicate with your child when out and about
    • Talk about the structure of words with your child (i.e., there are two beats/syllables in this word)
    • Show the written form of the word to go alongside their production
    • Split down tasks, so that your child only has to respond to one question at a time, reducing their motor capacity
    • Recognise when your child is working well and when they may need support of an Alternative and Augmentative Communication device
    • Allow all environments to have the same training and equipment (i.e., at school, home, out and about)
    • Have regular periods in the day where your child can practise their specific words in different environments. This can be effective for children with verbal dyspraxia
