Speech sounds practice at home

Speech therapists use a variety of tools to help children master specific sounds, and then the students are sent home with some practice sheets to use daily. Parents are able to observe what we do in the session, but I know that back at home three days later they can’t quite remember what it was all about and how to do the practice.

Here I explain the importance of visual cues, finger shapes, pictures, and semantic prompts (fancy speech therapy term for word clues!). By understanding these tools, you can turn practice time into a fun and engaging experience for both of you.

Why Visual Cues matter?

Imagine learning a new language just by listening. It’s tough, right? Young children learning new speech sounds face a similar challenge. Visual cues act like flashcards for their minds, giving them a clear picture of how to position their mouth and tongue.

  • Mirrors: Encourage your child to watch your face (and theirs) in the mirror as you make the sound together. This helps them see the tongue placement and lip movements required.
  • Mouth pictures: Speech therapy sheets often have pictures of mouths making specific sounds. Point to the picture and explain how the tongue and lips look, then have your child try to imitate it.
  • Your face is the best cue! Don’t underestimate the power of your own face. Over-enunciate the sound and let your child observe your mouth movements. Watch this little video clip where I am teaching the /SH/ sound to my little student. You cannot see him but we are both sitting on the floor opposite one another so that he can see me easily.

Finger fun: making sounds with our hands

Finger shapes are another powerful tool in my speech therapy arsenal. Think of them as fun reminders of how to position the tongue.

  • ‘Open Wide’ fingers: For sounds like /AH/ and /OH/, hold your fingers wide apart, mimicking an open mouth.
  • ‘Tongue Up’ fingers: For sounds like /T/ and /D/, touch the tip of your thumb to your other fingers, creating a little ‘wall’ like the tongue tip touches the teeth ridge.
  • ‘Snake Tongue’ fingers: For the /S/ sound, wiggle your pinky finger to represent the snake-like tongue tip.
  • In this little video clip I am demonstrating the C-shape moving forward which I had taught my child, showing how the windy sound (/SH/) travels forward with lips open and slightly pursed.

Bringing sounds to life with pictures

Pictures serve as visual prompts to connect the sound with a familiar word.

  • Video clip: I am using the WINDY SOUND picture and the FLAT TYRE sound picture to represent /SH/ and /S/ respectively
  • Point and Say: Point to each picture and say the word clearly, emphasising the target sound. Encourage your child to repeat.

Unlocking sounds with semantic prompts

Semantic prompts are fancy words for clues that help your child guess the target sound. They can be simple questions or descriptive words.

  • ‘Can you feel the wind whooshing?’ (/SH/)
  • Think of tyre going flat, or a balloon losing air, or a train coming to a slow halt (/S/)

Practice makes progress, but fun makes it funnier!

Remember, the key is to keep practice sessions light and engaging. Here are some extra tips:

  • Short and sweet: Stick to short practice times (5-10 minutes) to avoid frustration.
  • Make it a routine: Integrate practice time into your daily routine, like after breakfast or before bedtime.
  • Positive reinforcement: Celebrate your child’s efforts with praise and high fives!
  • Make it multisensory: Incorporate sensory activities like blowing bubbles for /F/ or feeling the wind for /SH/.

Parents you’re a vital part of your child’s speech development, and together we can make huge progress quickly.

  • The tricky /R/: Mastering tongue placement for clear speech

    The /R/ sound is notoriously challenging for many children (and even some adults!). It’s one of the most complex sounds in the English language, with various pronunciations depending on its position in a word. If your child is struggling with their /R/s, you’re not alone. As Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs), we frequently work on this sound, and a key component of our therapy is focusing on proper tongue placement.

    Why is the /R/ so difficult?

    The /R/ sound requires precise coordination of the tongue, jaw, and lips. Unlike sounds like /P/ or /B/ that involve simple lip movements, the /R/ involves intricate tongue movements and tension. There are also different ways to produce the /R/ sound, which adds to the complexity:

    • Retroflex /R/: The tongue tip curls up and back towards the roof of the mouth.
    • Bunched /R/: The body of the tongue bunches up towards the roof of the mouth, while the tongue tip remains down.

    The importance of tongue placement

    Regardless of which /R/ variation is being targeted, accurate tongue placement is crucial. Even a slight deviation can result in a distorted or inaccurate sound. That’s why SLTs dedicate significant time to teaching and practising tongue positioning.

    Speech therapy techniques: Focusing on the tongue

    Here’s a glimpse into how I address /R/ sound difficulties, with a focus on tongue placement:

    • Visual aids:
      • Mirrors: I use a mirror to help children see their tongue movements and make adjustments.
      • Tongue diagrams and models: These visual tools provide a clear representation of where the tongue should be positioned.
    • Tactile cues:
      • Tongue depressors: These can be used to gently guide the tongue into the correct position.
      • Food-grade tools: Sometimes, I use flavoured tongue depressors or other tools to provide tactile feedback and increase awareness of tongue placement.
    • Auditory discrimination:
      • I help children distinguish between correct and incorrect /R/ sounds.
      • I use auditory cues and verbal feedback to reinforce proper pronunciation.
    • Exercises and drills:
      • Tongue strengthening exercises: Strengthening the tongue muscles can improve control and coordination.
      • Tongue placement drills: We practise positioning the tongue in the desired location and holding it there.
      • Sound approximation techniques: Sometimes we use other sounds to help approximate the /R/ sound. For example, I use the /L/ sound, to help achieve the correct tongue placement. Once my child has found the /L/ sound it is then a matter of pulling back just slightly to get a good /R/.
    • Contextual practice:
      • Once the child can produce the /R/ sound in isolation, we gradually introduce it into syllables, words, phrases, and sentences.
      • We also practise the /R/ sound in different contexts, such as at the beginning, middle, and end of words.

    Tips for Parents:

    • Be patient and supportive: Learning the /R/ sound takes time and practice.
    • Practise regularly: Short, frequent practice sessions are more effective than long, infrequent ones.
    • Make it fun! Use games, stories, and other engaging activities to keep your child motivated.
    • Work with an SLT: A qualified SLT can provide personalised guidance and support.

    In conclusion:

    The /R/ sound can be challenging, but with targeted speech therapy and a focus on tongue placement, most children can achieve clear and accurate pronunciation.

  • What is FRONTING?

    Does your child say “Dough” instead of “Go”? Or “Tea” instead of “Key”? Do you hear a /Sh/ instead of an /S/ does “see” sound more like “she”?

    We Speechies call this a Fronting Pattern which means that a sound that should be produced at the back of the throat with the back of the tongue, like K or G , is said at the front of the mouth with the tip of the tongue, like a T or a D or SH. When this happens speech can be really hard to make out because these sounds are literally everywhere in everyday sentences. Just think how many K’s and G’s we hear in a simple sentence?

    For example, I heard my little student say earlier today: “I know what game we can play in your garden? It’s the one with cones and rings and cushions! I know where it is I can get it.”

    But it sounded like:

    “I know what DAME we DAN play in the DARDEN! It’s the one with TONES and rings and TUSHIONS! I know where it is I TAN DED it.”

    If that sounds familiar to you, here is a little overview of what we can do about it:

    First up it’s always good to start with general speech sounds awareness: does a child hear syllables and intonation? Do they know words that rhyme? Can they follow or copy a simple beat with a drum? Can they listen and hear quiet sounds and loud sounds and can they copy those? Can they follow mouth and tongue movements:, for example : stick out your tongue, lick your lips, click your tongue, blow raspberries?

    Then it really helps to talk about BACK and FRONT of things and to draw attention to the back of the mouth and the back of the tongue and the front tip of the tongue and how sounds are made in the mouth. I often use a puppet to show this or a model of a mouth like this one here in the picture.

    Next we try and listen to words starting with a BACK sounds like a K or a G , and I read out a list of words with those sounds: COW, CORE, CAT, CONE, KEY etc or ARK, EEK, OAK, ACHE…

    After that we try and see if a student can actually produce a single sound like a K or a G just by itself. If they can, that’s a really great start and if they can’t I help them to produce one – over a few sessions we usually get there. We call this Sound production in isolation.

    Once a child can produce a sound correctly, on its own, we try and start working on very simple words that are really powerful like “GO”!!!!! in a motivating game or “CAR” for little ones who love a car racing track.

    Now that we have established the back sounds and are using it in short words, we can gradually re-train brain pathways and oral- motor/movement pathways to use these new sounds in many words and then short phrases. That can take time!! This is called generalisation and it is not uncommon for it to take up a whole year for fluent speech to be error-free .

    Why does it take so long? Being able to produce a correct and clear K or G sound does not mean it will be used easily. Our brain pathways are fixated or habituated to the error sound. It takes time for habits to change. A child might be able to hear the word TIGER with a G in the middle and she knows that it is not a TIDER but when saying it her tongue automatically moves forward rather than lifts up at the back. It’s a bit like a person who has a rounded back: the brain knows to stand upright and how not to slouch, but when we don’t focus on it, ooops we have slouched again because that is what we are comfortable doing and our body moves with our habit.

    It takes effort and motivation to change our movement patterns and that includes our tongue and lip patterns! We usually get there through a huge variety of games and practice. Lots and lots of repetition is key as is motivation to change.

    Parents and carers are crucial in the success of Speech Therapy!

    We need your feedback at home, the regular short and sweet exercises, the constant positive encouragement and great modelling of speech sounds. We often find that parents are tuned into their child’s error sounds and can understand them much better than anyone else. This is great of course in many ways, however, it also means that the child has less motivation to change: if mummy understands me then my world is ok.

    Speech prompts and strategies I use in Speech Sound Therapy

    This particular student has a mild motor planning difficulty and six weeks ago he came to me with a very strong lisp. In addition to the lisp he is struggling to produce a number of sounds, SH and L on its own and all the clusters (FL/BL/KL/PL) but also CH together with some vowel difficulties.

    The prompts are a mix partially from the DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing) model by Dr Edythe Strand as well as phonological models I have learned over the years, and some of them are my own.

    Visual/picture prompts and Images

    Here I use the ‘Flat Tyre’ Sound, to offer as an image for a new S sound and the ‘Tick Tock’ Sound for a new image of the T sound. Both cards are from the Bjorem Speech Sound Deck, which I love and use almost daily.

    Gestural Cues

    I like to use all the ‘cued articulation’ hand cues by Jane Passy for consonants and fricatives. Here we use our fingers and hand to illustrate what our tongue does, and we also show whether a sound is voiced or voiceless. When I use one finger it is voiceless (k/f/s/p) and when I use two fingers for the same cue it means that the voice needs to be turned on: (g/v/z/b/n/m). For vowels I like to use Pam Marshalla’s cue system.

    Simultaneous production

    We say the word together.

    Direct imitation

    I say the word and my student copies me directly.

    Imitation after a delay

    I say the word and then after a little wait my student says the word.

    Spontaneous production

    My student has now learned to say the word by him/herself.

    Offering feedback

    It sounds like… I just heard… I didn’t hear the first sound there? Can you try again?

    Letting the student reflect

    By just shaking my head or by looking quizzical so that my student realises something didn’t quite go right.

    Postitive reinforcement

    ‘Yes that was it, do it again, nice one…’

    Cognitive reframing

    This is a technique where we identify different semantic cues and metaphors or imagery cues, so instead of teaching or focusing on a sound we try out viewing each syllable from a different point of view.

    For example: ‘yellow’. I have had great success with this one: we start with just saying ‘yeah yeah yeah’. I might make a little joke and say something like ‘imagine your mum says tidy your bedroom, what do you say or what do you think?’ Answer: ‘yeah yeah yeah’. Then we practice ‘low’ together, I might blow some bubbles high and low and we talk about ‘low’. And then we put ‘Yeah’ and ‘Low’ together and now we have YELLOW!! It might at first still sound a bit odd, like ‘yea-low’ but we soon shape that up and have the real word.

    Each student is different and having a great rapport is crucial to our success.

    Then a little game break after some 7–10 or so repetitions and always trying to finish on a positive note.

    What game breaks do I use:

    Very quick ones! Students can post something, place a counter in a game, take out a Jenga block from the tower, pop in a counter for ‘connect 4’, stick a sword into the Pop the Pirate barrel or add a couple of Lego blocks to something they are building.

    Treatment Approaches – A Typical Session

    There are various great ways to treat speech sound disorders and I use all the approaches available selectively; I decide what works with each individual child and I also vary the approach depending on the child’s frame of mind at any given time during my session.

    Some of the approaches are more “drill-based” and require a child to be able to pay attention and really participate actively in the therapy, and this is what I am showing you today with this video clip.

    My little student here has been working with me for some time and from only saying a handful of words which were not very easy to understand he has come a long way. He does have some features of Verbal Dyspraxia which I shall briefly outline here:

    • Making sounds in general is a struggle, especially when asked to copy certain sounds, example: ‘can you say: a ee ou oo?”
    • Repeating sound sequences or words sequences is hard, for example: “say p-t-k in sequence” or “say fish chips fish chips fish chips
    • When saying the same word again and again, different mistakes can be heard
    • Intonation difficulties: speech sounds monotonous
    • Vocabulary is very limited

    Some therapy approaches are more play based, for example the Core Word method: here we pick a few words at a time which are very significant to the child and therefore highly motivating to try and say. These could be characters of Pokemon or Minecraft for example, or simple words like “GO!”

    When you watch the video you will see that I use a lot of visual prompting, such as showing him where the tongue is moving to or from. I do this with my index finger and this approach is called Tactile Cueing or “Cued Articulation”. Part of the approach is to give a visual prompt and then reduce the prompt as the learner is more able to produce the correct sounds. Once he can produce the sound on its own, we quickly move to the sound within a word.

    I do mix and match my approaches and in fact here I am drilling but I also use the Core Word which for him (YELLOW) — it’s his favourite colour and I happen to have quite a few good games where a YELLOW something or other can be asked for….. WHO KNEW!? 🙂

    The importance of child-led therapy

    Child-led therapy is essentially what it says, therapy sessions that are directed by your child. You may think how can my child’s Speech and Language Therapist focus on goals if sessions are led by my child.

    Let us explain…

    Your child will be more receptive and motivated to take part in therapy if they have some form of input. E.g., they can choose what toys they want to play with, or how they want to play with the resources available. If sessions are child-centred then they are much more likely to engage and reach their goals, making intervention valuable. They will also be able to regulate their emotions, and use movement to support their need for regulation. E.g., some children like to jump whilst others like to run. As Speech and Language Therapists we need to use what is meaningful to your child to get the most out of intervention. By focusing on child-led therapy, we can build trust, which will allow us, in time, to use new techniques and activities that your child may enjoy. We want children to be themselves, to show their true personality. Therapy is about enhancing their skills in their own individualised way and child-led therapy allows for this.

    This way of working may seem daunting to some, but it doesn’t have to feel this way. Parents often feel if they are prepared then activities may go smoother. It might be the case, but perhaps it doesn’t give your child the opportunity for spontaneity. We’d like to suggest something that may lead to some surprises. Put out an activity that is your child’s favourite and then a completely new activity. Remember these activities don’t have to be complicated. Often, the simpler the better!

    So, no need to plan, just place two activities out and see what happens! Look out for anything which surprises you, which activity did they prefer? Do they have any sensory preferences? The freedom of choice is a wonderful thing to explore. So, just go with the flow!

    The kind of activities that are useful for child-led play can include:

    • Hide and seek
    • Cooking or baking
    • An Exercise ball
    • Small world play
    • Pretend play
    • Musical instruments (you could even have a go at making your own)

    Child-led therapy is a very useful resource. We have it at our fingertips. We don’t need special resources. You just need yourselves and your child! Sometimes, child-led therapy can be tricky to put in place. It sounds easy but is much harder in reality. So, make sure you give it time and reflect on your experiences. Ask yourselves ‘what went well’, and ‘what could be improved’. E.g., perhaps you gave your child time to lead to begin with, but you didn’t give them enough time to think about their options during the activity.

    How can parents become more child-led in the home environment?

    • Pause and use silence. This gives your child the opportunity to lead.
    • It’s perfectly natural to want to talk. Afterall, this is how adults maintain conversations. If you find yourself talking too much, count to ten! This will allow your child time to respond or initiate in the conversation or interaction.
    • Move down to your child’s level. It’s much easier to see what’s going on if you’re at the same height.
    • Videoing you and your child can really help you to see where your strengths lie. You’ll also be able to make minor tweaks to improve your communication during child-led play.

    Chaining: A powerful tool for phonological development

    Understanding chaining

    Chaining is a therapeutic technique I like to use in my speech therapy work with children who have Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) or phonological speech sound difficulties. It helps to break down a complex target behaviour into smaller, more manageable steps. By systematically teaching and reinforcing each step, I can help my students achieve their communication goals.

    There are two types of chaining: Forward and backward chaining

    Today I am going to show and talk about backward chaining. This technique involves starting with the last step and working backward to the first. This approach can be particularly effective for children with persistent speech sound difficulties where combining consonants into clusters, such as /BL/ or /FR/ or /SHR/ is very difficult.

    Backward chaining allows my student to experience immediate success and build his confidence.

    In my video I show you how I applied backward chaining to the words ‘Shriek’, ‘Shrub’, ‘Shrimp’ etc

    My student struggles with both the /SH/ and the /R/ sounds and we have been working on both sounds for some weeks now. He has mild Childhood Apraxia of Speech and he has difficulties with coordinating his tongue movements, breathing and using his jaw effectively to make words. His sound repertoire has grown a lot since we started working together last year. Today in this session I show you how we pulled both the sound /SH/ together with /REEK/ to make ‘SHRIEK’. I love using the pictures and therapy materials from Adventures in Speech Pathology.

    This is also part of the Complexity approach which I will explain in a separate blog post.

    • Step 1 (not shown in the video): I explain what the word means; I find that when my student understands what a word means he is much better at saying it. It increases his confidence and motivation to say a word that he knows the meaning of. Often this student does not tell me that he does not know what a word means, so I always remind myself to check that out first.
    • Step 2 (not shown in the video): We do a little rhyming game and think about what any one word rhymes with: ‘Shriek’ – ‘meek’, ‘weak’, ‘seek’.
    • Step 3: I show my student that there are two parts to this word /reek/ and the sound /SH/.
    • Step 3: We practise the easier part: /reek/ /reek/ /reek/.
    • Step 4: We add the /SH/ sound and pull it together to make our target word ‘Shriek’.

    /REEK/ /REEK/ /REEK/ + /SH/ = ‘SHRIEK’
    /RUB/ /RUB/ /RUB/ + /SH/ = ‘SHRUB’
    /RUG/ /RUG/ /RUG/ + /SH/ = ‘SHRUG’

    By breaking down the word into smaller, manageable steps, my student can focus on each syllable individually, get that right and then gradually build up to the full word. This approach can help to reduce frustration and increase motivation.

    Forward chaining

    Forward chaining is the same process but in reverse: we start with the front sound or syllable and work forward towards the next/last part of the word:

    /SH/ + /REEK/ = ‘SHRIEK’
    /SH/ + /RUB/ = ‘SHRUB’
    /SH/ + /RUG/ = ‘SHRUG’

    Benefits of chaining

    • Increased motivation: By starting with the last step, my student experiences success, which boosts his motivation to continue trying to say the word and trying other words.
    • Reduced frustration: Breaking down the target behaviour into smaller steps can make the task less overwhelming, reducing frustration and anxiety.
    • Improved confidence: As the little learner masters each of the step, his confidence and self-esteem increases. Again, this leads to increased motivation.
    • Faster learning: By focusing on the final step first, and practising lots of chaining (forward and backward), a student can quickly learn to generalise to other words.

    Backward chaining (and forward chaining) is a really great tool for teaching complex speech sounds and words to children with phonological disorders.
