Using AAC in daily life

Communication is a fundamental human right, a bridge that connects us to the world and each other. For many, spoken language is the primary mode, but for individuals with complex communication needs, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) offers a powerful pathway to expression and connection. This guide will demystify AAC, highlight the crucial role of modelling, and provide practical examples of how low-tech AAC can be seamlessly integrated into everyday activities.

What is AAC in a nutshell?

AAC encompasses a wide range of tools and strategies that supplement or replace spoken language. It’s not about replacing speech, but rather about providing additional ways for individuals to communicate effectively. Think of it as a spectrum:

  • Unaided AAC: This involves using only your body, such as gestures, facial expressions, body language, and sign language.
  • Aided AAC: This involves external tools or devices. These can range from low-tech options like picture boards and communication books to high-tech speech-generating devices (SGDs) and apps on tablets.

The beauty of AAC lies in its flexibility and personalisation. It empowers individuals to express their wants, needs, thoughts, and feelings, fostering independence and participation in all aspects of life.

Modelling is KEY: Showing, not just telling

Imagine trying to learn a new language without ever hearing it spoken. It would be incredibly difficult, right? The same principle applies to AAC. Modelling is the single most important strategy for teaching and supporting AAC users. It means actively using the AAC system yourself while talking, demonstrating how to navigate the system and express messages.

Here’s why modelling is so vital:

  • It’s how we learn language: Typically developing children learn language by hearing it constantly around them. AAC users need the same immersion.
  • It reduces pressure: When you model, you’re not asking the individual to communicate, you’re just showing them how it’s done. This takes the pressure off and makes learning more enjoyable.
  • It expands vocabulary and concepts: By modelling a variety of words and phrases, you introduce new vocabulary and demonstrate how to combine symbols to create more complex messages.
  • It demonstrates purpose: Modelling shows that AAC is a functional and effective way to communicate, not just a set of pictures.

So, how do you model? It’s simple: point to the symbols on the communication board or device as you speak the words. For example, if you say, ‘Time to eat breakfast,’ you might point to ‘time’, ‘eat’, and ‘breakfast’ on the board.

Low-tech AAC in action: Everyday activities

Low-tech AAC, such as communication boards, books, or single-page displays, is incredibly versatile and can be easily incorporated into daily routines. These can be as simple as printed pages with symbols, laminated for durability.

Let’s explore how low-tech AAC can be used throughout a typical day, with examples of symbols:

1. Getting ready for nursery

Mornings can be busy, but they also offer rich communication opportunities. A ‘Getting Ready’ communication board can help sequence activities and offer choices.

Activity example:

‘Time to get up!’ (point to GET UP). ‘What do you want to wear today, the blue shirt or the red shirt?’ (point to GET DRESSED) ‘Then, we brush teeth’ (point to TOOTHBRUSH) and so on.

2. Breakfast Time

Mealtimes are perfect for making choices, expressing preferences, and commenting. A ‘Breakfast’ communication board can focus on food items, actions, and social comments.

Activity example:

‘What do you want to eat for breakfast?’ (point to EAT). ‘Do you want cereal or toast?’ (point to CEREAL or TOAST). If they finish their milk, you could say, ‘Are you ALL DONE or do you want MORE MILK?’ (point to symbols).

3. Catching the Bus

Even routine transitions like catching the bus can be communication rich. A small, portable ‘Travel’ board can be useful.

3. Being on the playground

The playground is a dynamic environment perfect for commenting, requesting actions, and engaging in social play.

Activity example:

‘Let’s PLAY!’ (point to PLAY). ‘Do you want to go on the SWING or the SLIDE?’ (point to symbols). If they are on the swing, you can say, ‘Do you want to go FAST or SLOW?’ (point to symbols) and ‘Push AGAIN!’ (point to PUSH) You can also model social language like ‘It’s MY TURN.’

Beyond the symbols: Key takeaways

  • Consistency is key: Use AAC consistently across all environments and with all communication partners.
  • Be patient: Learning a new language takes time. Celebrate small successes.
  • Make it fun: Integrate AAC into play and enjoyable activities.
  • Follow the individual’s lead: Respond to all communication attempts, even if they are imperfect.

    If your child says ‘dar’ instead of ‘star’, you might be wondering if they will simply outgrow it or if they require specialised support. While ‘cluster reduction’—dropping one of the sounds in a blend—is a normal part of learning to talk, we typically expect these sounds to lock into place by age four years. If these errors persist as a child approaches school age, it often signals a speech sound delay that may now no longer pass without help. As a Speech and Language Therapist, I specialise in helping children bridge this gap using evidence-based techniques like backward chaining.

    This isn’t about constant correction; it’s about providing the right clinical scaffolding to move a child from ‘frustrated’ to ‘fluent’ before they hit those critical early school years.

    Dropping sounds from words is a common feature of speech sound difficulties, and while it can look small on the surface, it can have a big impact on how clearly a child is understood. In this short video clip, I’m working with a child on an /ST/ sound cluster, demonstrating how I use an evidence-based speech therapy technique called backward chaining to help children build clearer speech with confidence.

    What’s actually happening when a child drops the ‘S’?

    Clusters like /ST/, /SP/, and /SK/ are tricky. They require:

    • precise timing
    • careful airflow
    • and the ability to blend sounds smoothly

    For many children, especially those with speech sound difficulties, this is a big ask.

    So instead of hearing:

    ‘star’

    we might hear:

    ‘tar’ or ‘dar’

    This isn’t laziness or refusal. It’s the child simplifying the word to make it manageable.

    Why I don’t start by saying ‘say star’

    Telling a child to ‘just add the S’ rarely works.

    Instead, I meet them where they are already successful.

    In this clip, the child can already say ‘dar’ clearly. That’s our starting point.

    Backward chaining: building speech from success

    Backward chaining means we:

    1. Start with the part of the word the child can already say
    2. Gradually add the missing sound
    3. Keep the child feeling successful at every step

    So rather than jumping straight to ‘star’, we:

    • secure the ending
    • gently introduce the /S/
    • and blend it in a way that feels achievable

    This approach reduces frustration, builds confidence, and helps the sound stick not just in the therapy room, but out in the real world.

    Why this matters beyond one word

    This isn’t just about saying ‘star’.

    It’s about:

    • teaching the mouth a new movement pattern
    • giving the brain time to organise the sound sequence
    • and helping the child feel capable, not corrected

    When therapy feels safe and successful, children are far more likely to generalise their new sounds into everyday speech.

    Speech therapy works best when children feel supported not tested.

    • avoids longer or trickier words
    • or becomes frustrated when they’re not understood

    This is the kind of work I do every day building speech step by step, in a way that respects each child’s pace and strengths.

    There is more than one way to model communication: Using speech prompts, signs, and AAC together in therapy

    One of the most important things I have learned as a paediatric speech and language therapist is this:

    Children do not all learn communication in the same way.

    Some children learn best through listening.
    Some need visual support.
    Some need movement and gesture.
    Some benefit from symbols or technology.
    And many children need multiple supports together before communication truly starts to develop.

    That is why flexible, responsive therapy matters so much.

    In this short therapy clip, I model just two simple words:
    ‘Go’ and ‘Up’.

    But underneath those tiny moments is a combination of therapeutic strategies:

    • speech sound prompting
    • visual cueing
    • Makaton signing
    • AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) modelling
    • repetition
    • motor planning support
    • language modelling
    • total communication principles.

    Communication is bigger than speech alone

    One of the biggest misconceptions about speech therapy is the idea that communication only ‘counts’ if a child says the word verbally.

    In reality, communication comes in many forms:

    • speech
    • gesture
    • facial expression
    • signing
    • pointing
    • symbols
    • body language
    • AAC.

    This is particularly true for children with:

    • developmental language disorder (DLD)
    • autism
    • motor speech difficulties
    • childhood apraxia of speech (CAS)
    • phonological difficulties
    • global developmental delay
    • complex communication needs.

    These children often need communication to be presented through multiple pathways at once.

    That is where total communication approaches become so powerful.

    This is important to know: this does not confuse children. In fact, for many children, it does the opposite. It creates clarity.

    Careful sound prompting helps bridge that gap.

    Research and clinical experience consistently show that signs often support spoken language development rather than hinder it.

    Research suggests that learning signs alongside spoken language does not hinder speech development and may support overall language acquisition, communication confidence, and vocabulary growth in many children.

    For many children, signs actually help speech emerge because they:

    • reduce communication pressure
    • build confidence
    • strengthen understanding of words.

    A child who can successfully communicate is far more likely to keep attempting interaction.

    The power of AAC and LAMP Words for Life

    In the clip, I also model language using an electronic AAC system: LAMP Words for Life.

    AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

    AAC includes any tool that supports communication beyond speech alone, including:

    • picture systems
    • symbol boards
    • communication books
    • speech-generating devices.

    LAMP Words for Life is one of my favourite AAC systems because it focuses on consistent motor patterns and meaningful language development. Because communication is not about achieving perfection. It is about connection.

    And when children are given multiple ways to express themselves, they often become more confident, more engaged, and more willing to interact with the world around them.

    That is the true power of total communication therapy.

    From ‘Nailed it!’ in therapy to ‘Whoops!’ at home: Why generalising speech sounds is tricky

    As a parent, you’ve likely experienced the triumphant feeling when your child, who’s been working so hard on his or her /S/ sound, produces it perfectly in a therapy session. He or she is rocking those ‘sun’ and ‘socks’ words, his or her lisp seemingly a distant memory. You leave feeling elated, confident that all that hard work is finally paying off.

    Then you get home. And within minutes, you hear it: ‘Thooper!’ instead of ‘Super!’ Or maybe the clear /R/ in ‘rabbit’ from therapy reverts to a ‘wabbit’ when his or she is playing with his or her toys. It’s frustrating, confusing, and can feel like you’re back to square one.

    So, what’s going on? Why is it so difficult for children to take those amazing skills learned in a focused therapy session and seamlessly apply them to their everyday conversations? You’re not alone in wondering this. It’s a common challenge in speech therapy and understanding the ‘why’ can help both parents and children navigate this crucial stage.

    The brain’s habits: Old pathways are strong pathways

    Think of your child’s brain as having established ‘pathways’ for how he or she produces certain sounds. If he or she has been lisping his or her /S/ sound for years, that neural pathway is deeply ingrained. It’s like a well-worn path through a field: easy to follow because it’s always been there.

    In therapy, we’re essentially trying to forge a new path. We’re teaching him or her a new, more accurate way to make the sound. This new path is initially faint, like a barely visible trail. It takes conscious effort and repeated practice to strengthen it. Outside of the structured therapy environment, his or her brain often defaults to the old, comfortable, and well-established pathway, even if it’s not the most accurate.

    The demands of daily conversation: A multitasking challenge

    Therapy sessions are designed to be focused and controlled. We isolate sounds, practice them in specific words, and provide immediate feedback. There are minimal distractions, and your child’s full attention is on his or her speech production.

    Now, consider daily conversation:

    • Speed: We speak much faster in natural conversation than we do during structured practice. There is less time to think about individual sounds.
    • Cognitive load: Children are simultaneously thinking about what they want to say, understanding what others are saying, processing social cues, and managing their emotions. Adding the conscious effort of producing a new speech sound correctly on top of all that is a huge cognitive demand.
    • Variety of contexts: In therapy, we might practise ‘sun’ and ‘socks’. In real life, the /S/ sound appears in countless words, in different positions within words, and alongside a vast array of other sounds. Each new word and phonetic context present a fresh challenge.
    • Lack of immediate feedback: In therapy, the speech therapist is right there to provide instant correction and reinforcement. In a playground, during a family dinner, or while playing with friends, that immediate, consistent feedback isn’t present.

    The role of automaticity: Making it second nature

    The ultimate goal of speech therapy isn’t just correct sound production; it’s automaticity. This means producing the sound correctly without having to consciously think about it. It’s like learning to ride a bike. Initially, every pedal stroke and steering adjustment is deliberate. Eventually, it becomes second nature.

    Generalisation is the process of moving from conscious, controlled production to unconscious, automatic production. This takes time, consistent practice, and exposure to a wide variety of real-life speaking situations.

    How can we help? Bridging the gap

    So, what can parents do to help their children bridge this gap between therapy success and everyday speech?

    1. Be patient and positive: This is a marathon, not a sprint. Celebrate the small victories and avoid getting discouraged by setbacks. Your positive reinforcement is crucial.
    2. Practise little and often: Instead of long, infrequent practice sessions, aim for short, consistent bursts throughout the day. ‘Sprinkle’ in opportunities to practise their target sounds in natural conversations.
    3. Create ‘sound awareness’ moments: Gently draw your child’s attention to his or her target sounds in everyday words. For example, if he or she is working on /R/, you might say, ‘Oh, you said ‘wabbit.’ Can you try to make your /RRR/ sound for ‘rabbit’?’
    4. Model correct production: Continue to model the correct production of their target sounds in your own speech.
    5. Collaborate with your speech therapist: Your therapist is your best resource! Ask them for specific strategies and activities you can do at home to support generalisation. They can also provide guidance on when and how to gently correct your child.

    Tips and tricks

    Below I have listed a few good tips and tricks that can help the transition from therapy room to daily life:

    Empowering your child as the ‘sound detective’:

    • ‘Secret sound listener’: Instead of you doing the correcting, make your child the detective. When you’re having a conversation, say ‘your /S/ sounds are sometimes a bit “slippery”’ (or whatever fun, non-judgmental term you like). Ask your child to quietly listen for your /S/ sounds. You can even purposely make a few ‘slippery’ ones (or correct yourself immediately after) and see if they notice. This shifts the focus from being corrected to actively listening and identifying the sound in a non-threatening way.
    • ‘Sound scorecard’: For a short period (maybe 10–15 minutes during a specific activity, like dinner or a game), provide a small notepad and pencil. Explain that your child is going to listen for his or her /S/ sounds and gently mark a tally every time he or she uses it correctly. The goal isn’t perfection, but awareness. This gives your child agency and a visual representation of progress. You can even make it a game: ‘Let’s see how many /S/ sounds we can catch in five minutes!’
    • /S/ sound song/rhyme creation: Work together to create silly songs or rhymes that are packed with /S/ sounds. The sillier, the better! You can sing them in the car, while doing chores, etc.
    • /S/ sound superpower: Frame the new sound skill as a ‘superpower’. ‘You’re getting so good at using your /S/ superpower! It’s going to help you speak so clearly and confidently.’
    • Highlighting successes: Always go out of your way to acknowledge and praise successful /S/ productions in natural conversation. ‘I really understood you clearly when you said ”s_top”.’ or ‘That /S/ sound was perfect when you told me about the “s_tory”!’

    Important considerations:

    • Keep it low-pressure: The goal is generalisation, not perfection. If your child is feeling pressured, he or she will likely revert to old patterns.
    • Focus on awareness, not just correction: Help your child become aware of his or her own speech rather than relying on you for corrections.
    • Short, frequent bursts: A few minutes of subtle focus multiple times a day is more effective than one long, forced session.
    • Acknowledge feelings: If your child expresses frustration about ‘being corrected’, validate these feelings. ‘I understand it can feel like a lot of listening, but we’re just trying to help you use that super /S/ sound all the time!’

    By incorporating these strategies, you can help your child naturally integrate the new /S/ sound into daily speech, fostering independence and confidence without it feeling like constant ‘testing’ or ‘correction’. Generalising new speech sounds is arguably the hardest part of speech therapy, but it’s also the most rewarding. With patience, consistent effort, and a collaborative approach between parents and therapists, children can successfully integrate their new, clearer speech sounds into every aspect of their daily lives.

    Strategies to support children with eating difficulties

    where the cause is NOT a swallowing problem, but we are having a “fussy eater” in the family, seeming for no obvious reason

    When parents have a child who find mealtimes or eating difficult, it can put pressure on the whole family dynamics. Once we have observed a child’s eating and drinking skills and found that they are not swallowing impaired, but are for want of a better word “fussy” or “picky”, we can then start to look at what might be underpinning the food aversions/picky eating/food avoidance. Two of the main questions parents have (of course) are:

    • ‘is my child getting the right nutrition?’
    • ‘how can I have less anxiety-provoking and stressful mealtimes?’

    We all tend to have an image in our minds about the ‘perfect mealtime’, and how mealtimes ‘should’ be. Speech and Language Therapists with a Feeding Specialism are the perfect professionals to help you unpick feeding issues. We are trained to look at swallowing and oral skills and we also know a lot about feeding behaviours and sensory difficulties which could be causing your child’s eating avoidance.

    Here are some strategies that can support children with their eating:

    1. Create and maintain a mealtime culture that suits your home and lifestyle. Then stick to that. We all need some routine in our lives to thrive. Mealtimes are no different. It might be that you eat in the same place for every meal, with the same knives and forks, concentrating on maintaining good posture. Children learn by repetition so the more familiar it is, the easier they will find it. In the physical sense, our bodies also need preparing for food, regardless of whether we are eating with our mouths or we are tube-fed. We want every child to connect all the dots of the process. It starts with their eyes, noses, expectations, memories of past experiences, feelings and then finally their mouths….
    2. Be an excellent role model. Children learn through watching others, so your child will be observing you without you knowing. Ensure that you are positive about the food you are all eating, and talk about how delicious, tasty, juicy, and yummy the foods are. Make the atmosphere around the dinner table light hearted. Even though you are secretly stressed about your child not eating, try and not show this. Instead pick a topic or put on some nice music, or talk about something your child might be interested in, and try and avoid coercing your child to eat. Leave small finger foods on their plates and have a range of foods available on the table so that your child can see that everyone is eating a range of foods and enjoying them.
    3. Use positive reinforcement. Try and think of mealtimes as fun and motivating. Children who are happy will likely be more inclined to try foods and take part in family mealtimes. Reward all interactions around food, so if your child merely touches a new food then praise this behaviour. Or if your child licks a food just once, again make a nice comment and praise your child for touching and licking the food. The takeaway here is to try and keep all messages positive around food.
    4. Keep offering all types of food. What often happens is that parents stop serving foods they know will not be eaten. This makes sense in a way; we don’t want wastage! However, try and keep the doors open and re-offer all types of foods, even the ones that your child has not wanted in the past. Try and give your child one food they will like and one food they have tasted before and liked before, even a little, and then one new food to try. So, your child always has something to fall back on and they can join in with eating. But they can also try (or at least look at and think about trying) other foods that you and perhaps the siblings are eating.

    Creating your calm: containment strategies for Sensory Processing Difficulties

    The world can be a beautiful and stimulating place, but for individuals with Sensory Processing difficulties (SPD), it can also be overwhelming and even painful. Everyday sights, sounds, smells, touches, and tastes can be amplified to uncomfortable or even unbearable levels. This can lead to anxiety, meltdowns, and a constant feeling of being on edge.

    One important coping mechanism for SPD is containment. Containment strategies are techniques that help individuals manage their sensory experiences and create a sense of calm and safety.

    Understanding containment needs:

    Containment needs vary greatly from person to person. Some individuals might find comfort in deep pressure, while others might crave quiet and solitude.

    Common containment strategies:

    Here are some examples of containment strategies that can be helpful for individuals with SPD:

    • Deep pressure: This can involve activities like wearing weighted vests, using weighted blankets, getting firm hugs, or applying deep pressure massage.
    • Movement: Engaging in rhythmic movements like rocking, swinging, or jumping can be calming for some individuals.
    • Proprioceptive input: Activities that involve proprioception, the sense of body awareness, can be grounding. Examples include yoga, stretching, and proprioceptive toys like chewy necklaces or fidget spinners.
    • Visual calming: Utilising calming visuals like nature scenes, dimmed lights, or fidget toys with visual patterns can provide a sense of peace.
    • Auditory modifications: Noise-blocking headphones, earplugs, or white noise machines can help block out distracting or overwhelming sounds.
    • Oral motor activities: Chewing gum, crunchy snacks, or chewy toys can provide sensory input and help regulate emotions.
    • Sensory bottles: Watching calming visuals move within a liquid-filled bottle can be visually stimulating and promote focus.
    • Creating a safe space: Having a designated quiet area at home or school where individuals can retreat to self-regulate can be invaluable. This space should be free from clutter and overwhelming stimuli and can include calming sensory items.

    Additional tips:

    • Be patient and understanding: It takes time and practice to find what works best for each individual. Be patient with yourself or your child as you explore different strategies.
    • Consistency is key: Once you find effective strategies, use them consistently in different settings to create a sense of predictability and comfort.
    • Communicate openly: Talk to teachers, caregivers, and others about individual needs and how they can support containment strategies.
    • Celebrate progress: No matter how small, acknowledge and celebrate successes in managing sensory experiences.

    Remember:

    Containment is not about suppressing sensory experiences altogether. It’s about creating a sense of control and reducing overwhelming sensations to a manageable level. By exploring different strategies and working with a qualified professional, individuals with SPD can develop the tools they need to navigate the world and experience life to the fullest.

    Five ways to increase confidence and reduce frustration in children with speech and language and communication difficulties

    Your child’s speech, language and communication difficulties may impact their self-esteem. And they may show signs of increased frustration. You want them to be full of confidence, increasing their participation in school and fully engaging with their peers.

    1. Practise active listening

    Speech difficulties can mean that it’s more challenging to understand what your child says. It’s important to show that you’re paying attention, giving them time to express themselves. Focus on what your child says rather than how they are speaking. Remember to maintain eye contact, and actively listen. Active listening and giving time can be trickier than it sounds. I can provide strategies to support your active listening skills.

    2. Give other means and forms of communication

    Allowing children to express themselves in a variety of ways (e.g., gesture, signs, written, use descriptions to describe a word (e.g., sand – you find it out the beach, it can have pebbles on it, it’s not the sea), use of symbols or high-tech augmentative communication methods such as a computer). Using different ways is vital in reducing frustration and communicating their message. If you’re unsure of what other forms of communication you can use, please contact me for some top tips.

    3. Praise efforts

    Providing specific praise allows your child to understand what they’ve achieved. E.g., you could praise the way your child listens, or how they take turns, or their resilience (e.g., “I like the way you listened” or “good listening”). Think of different ways you could praise you child during different activities, so you are prepared with phrases that you can use.

    4. Have clear start and end points in activities

    Some children with speech, language and communication needs have difficulties with transitioning from one activity to another. They also have difficulties with changes in routine. This can add to their frustration and changes in behaviour. So, how do you show a clear start and end to an activity? You can have a visual timetable, or you could have ‘start’ and ‘finish’ boxes where you place all the materials in the box labelled ‘start’. And once the activity has finished, you put the items in the box labelled ’finished’. If you need support with transitions, please contact me.

    5. Use visuals

    Visuals can support your child to understand routine and spoken language. Visuals can range from symbols to online images, to photographs, or a combination. Explore which type of visuals work well for your children. Using visuals can be powerful if used correctly. Make the most of the opportunities that visuals can provide for your family.
